Herald Letter (june/July 2009)

Dear Parishioners,

Christos Anesti!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Festival Weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day. May was a busy, fun, and emotional month for the GOYAns. Throughout the month of May, the GOYAns sponsored coffee hour every Sunday. I would like to thank everyone that helped out during coffee hour. The GOYAns also attended the St. George Greek Festival weekend from May 1st-3rd.This was an exciting weekend and I would like to thank the GOYAns that helped out at the Kids Corner, who helped bus tables, and everyone that helped out in the food lines. On May 10th, the GOYAns handed out beautiful flowers to all the Mother’s for Mother’s Day Appreciation Sunday. Congratulations, Dr. Maria Sakellarides, for being our Mother’s Day raffle gift basket winner! I would also like to thank Alex Vassilas, for reading a wonderful poem to all the Mother’s on Mother’s Day Appreciation Sunday. On May 17th, the GOYAns attended the Sunday School Graduation/Picnic Sunday Celebration and on May 31st the GOYAns attended the Senior Graduation Sunday Ceremony. This was a very emotional but exciting event for the senior GOYAns. I would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful years we spent together and the great memories we shared. Serving as GOYA President this year, has been a delightful learning experience that I will always remember. Giving back to this church and the community, that I call my second home, has been an honor. I want to thank Father Dimitrios, Father George, and Fr. Nick for their guidance and support. I would also like to thank Gabby Sakellarides for all her hard work and for being an amazing GOYA advisor. Lastly, but not least, I would like to thank all the Parishioner’s, fellow GOYAns, and GOYA Board Members for their dedication, support, and love.

As the summer approaches, the GOYAns have a few more events planned in the month of June. On June 14th, we will hold GOYA Elections for next year, directly after church in the library. I encourage everyone to get involved either by voting or running for a position and new members are welcome to attend. The Father’s Day Appreciation Sunday will be on June 21st. We will also be raffling off a Father’s Day gift basket, which will be our last GOYA fundraiser for the year. We will be selling raffle tickets for $5 each/ or 5 tickets for $20 every Sunday during coffee hour. Also, if you are interested in reading a poem in Greek or English during church on Father’s Day, please contact me at ikatradis@msn.com.  Lastly, the last GOYA event planned for this year is the Orthodox Youth Day at Kings Dominion, which will be on Thursday, June 25th. The entrance fee is $42 per person and this includes park admission and an all-you-can-eat picnic lunch. If you are interested in attending this fun event or have any questions, please contact Gabby, our GOYA Advisor, at gabby02885@aol.com by June 4th.

All notices and flyers for the upcoming events will be posted on the GOYA bulletin board and webpage and I will be sending GOYAns e-mails with more information concerning every event.

As always, the GOYAns are encouraged to participate in the Feed the Hungry Program. GOYAns meet every third Sunday of each month, at 9:30 A.M. We make sandwiches and donate them to a homeless shelter. Feed the Hungry is a great way to give back to the community. For more information, please contact Aris Michael, who will be heading up this program, at aris_p_m@yahoo.com.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ikatradis@msn.com.

Wishing you all a safe and wonderful summer!

God Bless,

Irene Katradis
GOYA President

About GOYA

GOYA consists of four characteristics of Worship, Fellowship, Service, and Witness. We participate in religious retreats throughout the year. We have many charitable events like Feed the Hungry, sponsoring families for holidays, and Christmas Caroling at nursing homes. We hold fundraisers to raise money for GOYA and the St. George community. We also are involved with fellowship activities like youth nights, dances, and lock-ins at least one Friday every month.

Becoming active in GOYA activities will establish new and life long friendships, it will develop your individual uniqueness, and it will give you a stronger understanding of your faith. Through these wonderful experiences, you will learn and grow and make memories that will last a lifetime.
