December 2006 Newsletter

Oh, to be able to run a Marathon and not suffer the historic fate of brave and determined Pheidippides! Three members of Saint George were able to do exactly that!

Months of training brought them to a good place and that place was Washington, D.C., along with 34,000 other runners who ran the 31st Marine Corps Marathon. The weather could not have been better. It was a beautiful autumn day-Sunday, October 29, 2006, with some merciful clouds in the sky. The runners were:

Katherine Hoenig (Lainas), Bib No. 4697
Michael Kranias, Bib No.1035
Rena Reese (Geckos). Bib No. 25555

Congratulations to our three runners who undoubtedly will always treasure the moment a United States Marine ceremoniously draped a medal around each of them. You have made yourselves, your families and your community proud! Bravo!

The Marathon route was 26.2 miles long and rather circuitous. It was planned so as to include and showcase the magnificent historic monuments of the city.

Runners ran for many reasons -- in memory of a loved one, in honor of one who couldn't, someone serving in Iraq, or for no reason at all -- Just for the fun and challenge of it.

There were runners who provided comic relief, as well as serious tears of exhaustion and pain; There were tears of disbelief and relief; tears of triumph and disappointment.

More information, including the running statistics of the three runners, as well as a map of the route of the race can be found on the Cultural Committee's bulletin board outside the church library.
