The New Hieromartyr Cosmas, Equal of the Apostles, in the world Constas, was a native of Aitolia. He studied at first under the guidance of the archdeacon Ananias Dervisanos, and afterwards continued his education on Mount Athos, at the Vatopedi school renowned for teachers such as Nicholas Tzartzoulios (from Metsovo) and Eugenius Voulgaris (afterwards in the years 1775-1779 the archbishop of Ekaterinoslav and the Chersonessus). Remaining on Athos at the Philotheou monastery to devote himself to spiritual labors, he was tonsured a monk with the name Cosmas, and later was ordained hieromonk. The desire to benefit his fellow Christians, to guide them upon the way of salvation and strengthen their faith, impelled St Cosmas to seek the blessing of his spiritual fathers and go to Constantinople. There he mastered the art of rhetoric and, having received a written permit of Patriarch Seraphim II (and later from his successor Sophronius) to preach the Holy Gospel.

So the saint began to proclaim the Gospel at first in the churches of Constantinople and the surrounding villages, then in the Danube regions, in Thessalonica, in Verroia, in Macedonia, Chimaera, Akarnania, Aitolia, on the islands of Saint Maura, Kephalonia and other places. His preaching, filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit, was simple, calm, and gentle. It brought Christians great spiritual benefit. The Lord Himself assisted him and confirmed his words with signs and miracles, just as He had confirmed the preaching of the Apostles.

Preaching in the remote areas of Albania, where Christian piety had almost disappeared among the rough and coarse people entrenched in sin, St Cosmas led them to sincere repentance and improvement with the Word of God. Under his guidance, church schools were opened in the towns and villages. The rich offered their money for the betterment of the churches, for the purchase of Holy Books (which the saint distributed to the literate), veils (which he gave women, admonishing them to come to church with covered heads),for prayer ropes and crosses (which he distributed to the common folk), and for baptismal fonts so that children could be baptized in the proper manner.

Since the churches could not accommodate everyone wanting to hear the wise preacher, St Cosmas with forty or fifty priests served the Vigil in the fields, and in city squares, where thousands of people prayed for the living and for the dead, and were edified by his preaching. Everywhere that St Cosmas halted and preached, the grateful listeners set up a large wooden cross, which remained thereafter in memory of this. The apostolic service of St Cosmas was brought to a close by his martyric death in the year 1779. At 65 years of age, he was seized by the Turks and strangled. His body was thrown into a river, and after three days, was found by the priest Mark and buried near the village of Kolikontasi at the monastery of the Entrance into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos. Afterwards, part of his relics were transferred to various places as a blessing.

He was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1961.

Gospel Matthew 17:14-23 At that time, a man came up to Him and kneeling before Him said, "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to Your disciples, and they could not heal him." And Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" He said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move hence to yonder place,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you." As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day."

EPISTLE
I Corinthians 4: 9-16 For I think that God has exhibited us apostles as last of all, like men sentenced to death; because we have become a spectacle to the world, to angels and to men. We are fools for Christ’s sake but you are wise in Christ. We are weak but you are strong. You are held in honor but we in disrepute. To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless, and we labor, working with our own hands. When reviled we bless; when persecuted, we endure. When slandered we try to conciliate; we have become and are now, as the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things. I do not write this to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the Gospel. I urge you thern, be imitators of me.

Dear Parishioners,

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe summer! As the new GOYA President, I'm looking forward to a new year filled with exciting and enjoyable events. I would like to thank last year's President, Stephanie Michael and last year's board members for all of their hard work and dedication. They made last year fun and successful. I would also like to congratulate the 2008-2009 newly elected board members. We are all very eager and excited for the upcoming year.
Over the summer, we started working on preparations for our 10th Annual Bishop George Memorial Basketball Tournament. Our Tournament will be held on October 11th and 12th at the Hoop Magic Sports Academy, in Chantilly, VA. The GOYA board and GOYAns will be busy planning the tournament over the next couple months. Over the past couple years, we have had a program book as a fundraiser for our tournament and we will be continuing this again this year. We would appreciate it if everyone would purchase an ad to support our GOYA. GOYAns will be selling ads every Sunday during coffee hour. An ad form has been attached in the back of the Herald for your convenience.
The 08-09 GOYA year will be filled with many events like our Annual Parent Tea.
This is our first general GOYA meeting for all GOYAns and their parents and it will be held September 14th directly following Sunday School at 12:00 Noon, in the Chapel. Registration, membership, forms, and the upcoming events for the new year will be discussed at this meeting. All notices and flyers for the upcoming year will be posted on the GOYA bulletin board monthly and throughout the year I will be sending GOYAns e-mails concerning every event. Our first upcoming event will be the Opening Bash and it will be held on September 19th. For more information please attend the Parent Tea.
Also, GOYAns are encouraged to participate in the Feed the Hungry Program. GOYAns meet every third Sunday of each month, at 9:30 A.M. We make the sandwiches and then donate them to a homeless shelter. Feed the Hungry is a great way to give back to the community. I'm looking forward to a fun and exciting year.

God Bless,
Irene Katradis
         GOYA President

About
JOY was established for youth ages 7-12 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church of Bethesda, Maryland in 1994. Across the country, one of the newest and fastest growing areas of youth ministry is one encompassing elementary age children. Until recently this was largely ignored, with Youth Ministry most often being defined as ministry to teenagers and young adults.JOY's mission is to provide an opportunity for JOY-aged children at St. George to socialize and have fun. JOY is run by many dedicated parents volunteering their time to ensure the children of St. George have an enriching experience through a variety of activities and events.

CHOIR REHEARSALS- Wednesday 7:30-9:00pm in the Choir Loft
THE BYZANTINE TONES
Part I * Part II

JOIN THE SAINT GEORGE CHOIR
A warm and welcoming invitation to all Saint George members to join our very talented and dedicated choir. Come and offer your talents and time in worship, praise, and thanksgiving to God with all the faithful on Sundays. Offer the gift of voice, the most natural, precious, and beautiful instrument of all, not made by human hands. You will find the choir a rewarding and inspirational ministry as you learn the Divine Liturgy and build beautiful and lasting relationships, which you will treasure for the rest of your life. Many people are intimidated by the size of our congregation and wonder how they can quickly feel a part of the community. One of the best ways is to join the choir and get plugged in with a dedicated group of people singing the beautiful hymns of the Orthodox Liturgy.

ABOUT OUR CHOIR
The Choir was organized in 1967 with the establishment of the St. George Parish. During the early year's -1967 to 1976 - George Seymore directed the Choir; Dino Pappas was the organist. Mr. Tassos Vrenios became the Choir Director in 1976 and retired in 2005. Teddy Dwight started as Choir Director in late 2005.In addition to chanting the responses and hymns for the Sunday Liturgies, Vespers and other special occasions, the Choir has performed at concerts, Patriarchal Ecumenical services and Diocese Choir Conferences. In 1984 the Choir hosted the annual Diocese Choir Conference. Over 125 choir members from various Diocesean churches sang the Liturgy of Peace by Chris Kypros. During the 1990 Clergy Laity Conference, the Choir was selected to provide the Liturgical music for the Ecumenical Service. The program, held at the Lincoln Memorial, included original scores of liturgical music written by Andreas Makris. In 1994 the Choir performed in concert at the newly dedicated Grand Hall. Over 600 people attended. The program included Greek folk songs, operatic arias and Broadway musical tunes. In 1997 the Choir provided the liturgical music for the Patriarchal Ecumenical service held at the National Cathedral and over 3,000 attended this service honoring Patriarch Bartholomew. Additional concerts include: the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater Concert series where the Choir performed a program of Greek folk songs and the American University Concert series featuring the St. George Choir in a program of Orthodox Liturgical hymns. Highlighting the Choir's liturgical performances were the recent services on June 13 and 14, 1998, for the Enthronement of Bishop George of Komanon and the Consecration of the St. George Church.

ABOUT All moms of newborns to 4 years old are welcome to join the LITTLE ANGELS group. In addition to the friendship and fellowship for the moms, the little angels have fun with each other.
For information and donations, please contact Ladia SiosiousANNOUNCEMENTS If the playgroup is small, and you are meeting in the nursery, please place your STROLLERS in the VENDING ROOM. It is a FIRE hazard to have them in the hallway. You can place strollers in the Founder's Hall on days we meet in there. Thank you so much for your cooperation.

HISTORY
Little Angel's is a playgroup for children from newborn to age 4, established by The Reverend Dr. Athanathios Demos in October of 1999 to promote new friendships within our Greek community, to establish a support system for the new Mothers of the community, and most importantly, to provide a fun, creative, relaxing, and engaging atmosphere for all our children to play, explore, interact, socialize, and develop into long-term friendship within the ministries of the church community.

ACTIVITIES
Educational Activities outside the church have included; a visit to the Zoo, Cox's Farm Pumpkin Patch, Fire House, Glen Echo Park, museums, picnics, and pool parties.

BENEFITS
Along with the networking of friendships, fellowship, and a place to come and get out of the house to escape the mundane every day activities, Philanthropic Aspects of Little Angels Little Angels feels very strongly about giving to its community and those less fortunate in any way possible. We have one annual charity that we support each Christmas, which is Toys for Tots. We feel since we are the youngest organization at St. George that we have the experts to help us pick out what needy children would love best under their tree. We graciously contribute to the St. George Festival, Goya, Kollecas House, St. Basil's Academy, Hats Off Silent Auction, The Vasilopita, MWOSH, The Ladies Philoptochos of St.George, Nursery/Cribbery, Epitaphios. We feel these charitable causes enrich us and not only help us grow but allow our community to grow and prosper as well.

AboutThe Fifty Plus Group is for Christian fellowship organized for those in the parish who are 50 years or older. In the early years of the parish, there was no need for such an organization for the vast majority of the membership was composed of young married couples with small children. In recent years, the organization has grown into a strong and viable community group. They meet twice a month for lunch and have special events at these meetings such as speakers and other activities. They also have a very active social calendar by attending various museums, galleries, and taking tours of important and historic sites. The Fifty Plus Group has become an important part of raising funds for the parish through their efforts at the twice-yearly-held St. George Festivals and also providing funds for charitable and development needs.

NEWSLETTERStudents, here's a great opportunity to earn community service hours. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to the shelters served by St, George, specifically in January. ABOUTIt's been about 16 years since the Feed the Hungry program started serving food to area shelters. Today, the need for this program is as great as ever.A bit of background: Volunteers cook a delicious stew on the third Sunday of each month and take the food, along with fruit, salad, and sandwiches (put together by Goyans), to three shelters in Rockville.Chase Shelter for menHelping Hands Shelter for women & childrenDorothy Day Shelter for women

Cooking ScheduleThird Sunday of every month after church servicesAbout
The Saint George Feed the Hungry Program began with the leadership of two caring parishioners, Susan and Albert Alexander. "They showed us the way." The couple believed a church such as Saint George needed to reach out to the greater community, and the best way to do that was to prepare a meal and serve food to several shelters in the area. What the Alexanders found was a ready and able volunteer group led by Julia Plomasen to prepare a "hot" meal to complement all the foods. That was in 1990. In 1992, Peggy and Bob Hackman took over the chairmanship and work with a dedicated group of parishioners. Today, the Feed the Hungry volunteers cook, deliver and serve a delicious stew made of meat, vegetables, and potatoes, together with fruit, salad, and sandwiches. They also pick up baked goods such as breads, rolls, and pastries donated by Stella's bakery. These are then delivered to Chase Men's Shelter, Helping Hands Women and Children Shelter, and Dorothy Day Women's Shelter. Food is also delivered and served to the homeless women at Rainbow Place, a shelter open from November 1 through March 30.

GEORGE The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George is a very active parish of over 900 families and is blessed with a beautiful House of Worship and community. We have many facilities to serve our people and carry out the ministries of our Lord. These include our Sanctuary, The Bishop George Cultural Center, the Presvytera Maria Papaioannou Grand Hall, the Founders' Hall and Chapel, our administrative offices and the Kollecas House.

WHO WILL MY STEWARDSHIP COMMITTMENT INCLUDE? The Stewardship Commitment includes husband and wife for married couples and single adults as Stewards. Family members over 18 years of age, who are employed, should make their own Stewardship Commitment.

STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM

The St. George Stewardship Program supports the Christian practice of regular giving of time, talent, and treasure to the Church. Stewards are encouraged to contribute their time and talents by volunteering in the numerous community and ministry programs that are supported by St. George. Parish families are also expected to pledge a proportion of their financial treasure toward the Church and its ministries by participating in the annual pledge drive that begins each fall.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A STEWARD?

A Steward, according to the Bible, is one who manages the gifts entrusted to him for the perpetuation of the Lord's work.

Our money and possessions are not ours, but on loan. When we give to the Church, we return to God, the Owner, His rightful portion. The more we are given, the more will be expected of us. "Those to whom much is given, much is expected."

WHY PLEDGE?

Stewardship pledges are critical to the activities and ongoing operation of our parish, and they are St. George's central funding source. Your stewardship contributions help support the following:
Religious Services and Sacraments Religious Counseling Visitations to the Hospitalized and Home-Bound Sunday School (Over 450 Students) & Greek School (Over 250 Students) Outreach Programs to Assist those in Need (e.g., Feed the Hungry, Area Food Banks, Bishop George Philanthropic Fund, etc.) Youth and Athletic Programs (e.g., Little Angels, Joy, Hope, Goya, Young Adult League, Basketball Teams) Cultural & Social Programs Utilities, Maintenance, Repairs and Housekeeping Administrative Staff Mortgage Reduction Church Information, Website, Publications, and Mailings Archdiocese Ministries

Your strong financial stewardship commitment provides ongoing benefits. For example, annual Sunday School dues are waived for St. George stewards in good standing. Thank you for supporting the religious training and preparation of our youth.
