About Our Parish

The Greek Orthodox Church of St. George is a community of Orthodox believers that professes faith in One God, the Holy Trinity, and in the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the Eternal Word of the Father who was made flesh for us and for our salvation. In the power of the Holy Spirit we seek to preach the Gospel, gather for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, and do the good works that the Lord has commanded us to do. We are part of the Holy Orthodox Church that has neither taken away from nor added to the Sacred Tradition handed down to us from the Holy Apostles.
We have been given over to the Holy Great Martyr St. George as our patron and inspiration. To him we pray for strength. By his prayers we grow and remain faithful to the Gospel that we preach by our lives.
The mission of our parish is that of every Orthodox parish: to seek the healing of the believer and the restoration of the active awareness of the Divine Image deep in his/her heart. St Athanasius teaches that the ultimate goal of man is to “become by grace what God is by nature.” This is theosis. It is the call to “become God.” It is the call of every believer. Our parish exists, first and foremost, to assist in the healing of the soul which makes theosis possible. The Church is the spiritual hospital. The priest is the iatros pnevmatikos -- the “doctor of the soul.” The Sacred Scripture, the Holy Mysteries (Sacraments), and the ministries of love that are at the heart of our Church, are prescriptions for spiritual healing. This spiritual calling is our primary vocation and purpose. All else comes from it and all else is subject to it. This therapeutic model for the Church is our vision for our parish.
We minister and live under the Bartholomew I, Successor to St. Andrew the Apostle, Ecumenical Patriarch, and Archbishop of Constantinople and New Rome. We are members of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, under the omophorion of His Eminence Archbishop Demitrios, Exarch of the Ecumenical Throne. Our parish is part of the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey under the Archpastor Metropolitan Evangelos. Our heritage is rooted in the deep spirituality and culture of Greece and the profound historical experience of Byzantium.
We are imperfect. We are earthen vessels into which is poured the Divine Image. We seek the healing and salvation of ourselves and each other, and all who are in need. In the end, we strive to realize the City of God here in the often troubled city of man. May God give us the grace to continue that holy work.
TO HIM BE GLORY UNTO THE AGES OF AGES!
